MIAMI GARDENS, Fla., Nov. 9 (UPI) -- Miami Dolphins defenders transformed the line of scrimmage into a filthy fracas, disrupting Josh Allen's Buffalo Bills on Sunday in a 30-13 upset.
The Dolphins shut out their AFC East division foes through three quarters and forced three turnovers, while running back De'Von Achane amassed more than 200 yards from scrimmage in Miami Gardens, Fla.
"We put in the work, week in and week out, so this wasn't a shock to us," said Achane, who erupted for 174 rushing yards, 51 receiving yards and two scores.
The Dolphins, who lost four of five games entering the contest, left Hard Rock Stadium with just their second win over the Bills since 2018.
"Every time you can get a win in the NFL, that's special," Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa said. "But given the times we'e played Buffalo in the past and gotten close and gotten blow out, I think this one makes it that much more special."
The Dolphins got off to a rocky start, with Bills safety Cole Bishop intercepting Tagovailoa of the first drive of the day. But the home team responded with scores on their next two drives and never looked back.
They drew first blood when Tagovailoa threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Malik Washington about 10 minutes into the first quarter.
Tagovailoa launched a 38-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jaylen Waddle early in the second quarter for a 13-0 Dolphins lead.
Bills running back James Cook lost a fumble later in the quarter, which led to a 46-yard field goal from Riley Patterson to help the Dolphins carry a 16-0 lead into halftime.
The Dolphins out-gained the Bills 221 to 90 in total yards over the first two quarters, with the visitors going 0 for 6 on third-down conversion attempts. They also held an edge of nearly eight minutes in time of possession.
Bills quarterback Josh Allen led a nine-minute drive to start the second half, but threw an interception to safety Ifeatu Melifonwu in the end zone to end that possession.
The Bills finally put points on the scoreboard when Allen threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Keon Coleman about 2:24 into the fourth quarter.
Tagovailoa threw his second interception of the day on the next drive, but the Dolphins defense rallied to get the ball back. Linebacker Jordyn Brooks stripped Allen during a 15-yard run for another forced turnover. Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick recovered the loose ball.
Just seconds later, Achane broke loose for a 59-yard touchdown run. The Bills cut into the deficit when Allen threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jackson Hawes on the next possession.
But Achane proceeded to break free once again three snaps later for a 35-yard touchdown run.
Tagovailoa completed 15 of 21 passes for 173 yards, two scores and two interceptions. Waddle hauled in five catches for 84 yards and a score.
Defensive lineman Zach Sieler and linebackers Bradley Chubb and Willie Gay Jr. each registered sacks for the Dolphins.
Allen completed 28 of 40 passes for 306 yards and two touchdowns, but also logged two turnovers.
The Bills (6-3) will host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Nov, 16 in Orchard Park, N.Y. The Dolphins (3-7) will play the Washington Commanders on the same day in Madrid.
