Brighton and Crystal Palace played out a forgettable 0-0 draw on Sunday afternoon at Selhurst Park, with Fabian Hurzeler’s side battling to their second clean sheet in as many weeks.
Both sides squandered big chances to break the deadlock throughout the clash, with Yankubah Minteh scuffing his effort wide in the first half before Ismaila Sarr and Daicha Kamada both failed to sort their feet out when finding themselves in dangerous positions after the interval.
The Seagulls looked set to be offered the chance to take the lead after an hour when referee Tim Robinson pointed to the spot after Georginio Rutter looked to have been brought down by Jaydee Canvot. However, the No. 10 was adjudged to have dived and a VAR review saw the decision overturned.
_The Brighton Base takes a look at how each Seagulls star performed on Sunday afternoon…_
**Bart Verbruggen – 8**
After coasting to a clean sheet against Leeds, the Dutchman was forced to work for this one. Made smart saves to deny Sarr and Yeremi Pino, as well as coping admirably with Jefferson Lerma’s constant stream of long throws.
**Mats Wieffer – 8**
An impressive display from the right-back. Made a number of important challenges and interceptions to minimise the threat of Tyrick Mitchell down the left.
**Lewis Dunk – 7**
A composed display from the Seagulls skipper in a fixture which has often boiled over. Dealt with the physicality of Jean-Philippe Mateta well, preventing Palace from reverting to the direct style which has given them plenty of success over the past few months.
**Jan Paul van Hecke – 7**
The centre-back was similarly impressive up against Mateta. Showed maturity to resist the urge to step up into midfield and press high, preventing the Eagles’ frontline from outnumbering his teammates on the counter.
**Ferdi Kadioglu – 7**
The Turkish international enjoyed an impressive first half, but his impact fizzled out after the interval. Nevertheless, he has made the left-back spot his own with his influence at both ends of the pitch.
**Carlos Baleba – 5 (Veltman, 75’)**
Coasted through the game without truly making his mark. Misplaced several passes and was fortunate that Sarr didn’t capitalise on the midfielder’s lackadaisicalness after he turned into Adam Wharton deep inside his own half, allowing the England international to drive forward and slip his teammate through, but the ex-Watford star ultimately failed to get a shot away. Booked.
**Yasin Ayari – 8**
Rose to the occasion to carry the weight of the midfield. Kept play ticking and shut down a handful of Palace attacks with smart reading of the game.
**Yankuba Minteh – 5**
An afternoon to forget for the winger. His end product looked to have improved [against Leeds](https://thebrightonbase.com/brighton-vs-leeds-player-ratings-gomez-welbeck-ayari/), but he will need to prove it wasn’t a flash in the pan. The Gambia international should have done far better when teed up in the first half, and he went on to lose possession a further four times.
**Georginio Rutter – 5 (Kostoulas, 75’)**
Out of form, and looks somewhat out of ideas as well. The Frenchman ran his socks off but couldn’t make it stick with the ball at his feet, turning into danger more often than not. His dive left a sour taste, and he was duly booked for the theatrics.
**Diego Gomez – 7 (De Cuyper, 85’)**
Proved to be a real handful out wide, albeit granted the freedom to roam into central areas. The Paraguayan created four chances in total, as well as coming close to opening the scoring in the first half when blasting his shot straight at Dean Henderson.
**Danny Welbeck – 6 (Tzimas, 85’)**
The veteran striker was unable to prove that Thomas Tuchel made the wrong call in [overlooking him for England](https://thebrightonbase.com/brighton-news-thomas-tuchel-danny-welbeck-england/) with a fairly quiet display. Linked up play well but generally struggled against the solid Palace back-three.
**Substitutes**
**Joel Veltman – 6**
Returned from injury in a fixture he would have hated to miss. Made a handful of defensive contributions, which included a strong, late challenge on Mitchell, which saw him booked.
**Charalampos Kostoulas – 6**
The 18-year-old’s movement added another dimension to the Brighton attack, but his overall play in possession left plenty to be desired. Showed there is more to his game than what meets the eye though with some solid defensive work.
**Stefanos Tzimas – N/A**
**Maxim De Cuyper – N/A**
