Red Sox Lose Brother Of NBA Superstar To Free Agency

The Red Sox are in the process of putting together their roster for next season. Part of that is building depth, and they just lost a depth piece to free agency. Veteran outfielder Trayce Thompson [has elected free agency](https://www.milb.com/player/trayce-thompson-572204?stats=career-r-hitting-all&year=2025), according to his transaction log.

Thompson has played in 369 games in Major League Baseball, but has spent the last two seasons in Triple-A. The Red Sox signed him to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training last offseason.

Thompson is the younger brother of four-time NBA champion Klay Thompson. Like his older brother, he has spent most of his career playing in his home state of California. Before signing with the Red Sox, Thompson had played for the Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, Athletics, Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres.

Last season, Thompson played in 94 games for Triple-A Worcester. He posted a .226/.312/.405 slash line with 13 home runs. He did not get a chance in the big leagues thanks to the Red Sox’s loaded outfield.

Between Roman Anthony, Ceddanne Rafaela, Jarren Duran, Wilyer Abreu, Masataka Yoshida and Rob Refsnyder last year, there was no real path to a call-up for Thompson. He will likely look for a deal with an invite to spring training, where he can try to earn a spot on the roster.

Thompson has had some success when given an opportunity in the big leagues. He has 45 home runs and 126 RBIs in seven seasons. However, given how many talented outfielders are ahead of him in the Red Sox organization, he likely thinks he can find a better path back to the big leagues in free agency.

Thompson could be a solid fourth outfielder or depth piece for a team. He plays solid defense as well. He has committed just five errors in the big leagues in his career.
