Rooney gives Match Of The Day verdict on Rutter penalty decision

Wayne Rooney praised the VAR decision which led to an [Albion](https://www.theargus.co.uk/sport/albion/?ref=au) penalty being overturned.

But he admitted he thought it was a spot kick at the time.

West Sussex referee Tim Robinson pointed to the spot as Rutter looked to get between three Crystal Palace defenders in the 0-0 draw at Selhurst Park.

But he changed his decision after being told to take a look at the pitchside monitor.

Rutter was booked for simulation.

Former England star Rooney looked at the incident on BBC TV’s Match Of The Day.

He said: “The officials get this spot on.

“Refs can make a mistake on the pitch. In real time I thought it was a penalty.

“We can see here, Rutter, he has players around him and he has thrown himself to the ground trying to win a penalty.

“Rightly so, VAR have some in and got the right decision in the end.

“This was a very good use of VAR.”

Fellow pundit Danny Murphy said: “Don’t want to see that from anyone.”

But he appeared to be teasing Rooney as he then referred to an incident from his playing days.

Match Of The Day also showed a clip of their interview with Palace boss Olivier Glasner, who said: “It’s a clear diver.”
