LANDOVER, Md. -- Penei Sewell went to the ground in the first quarter and needed help off the field.
It was one of those moments that Detroit Lions fans are far too familiar with over the last couple of years. But Sewell said he is all good and that it was one of those things that started badly but got better.
Sewell missed only six plays after heading into the blue medical tent. He was back on the field the next time the offense had the ball to open the second quarter.
“I don’t know if it’s just an offensive line thing or a universal thing, but it was one of those things that started painful and then died down,” Sewell said after the team beat the Washington Commanders.
“It’s like at first knowing and at the same time working with your trainer. I was just saying this earlier in the week, ‘If I can go, I can do. It was one of those things where the pain just went away.”
Sewell is one of the most important players on the roster. The 25-year-old is already a three-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro offensive tackle.
It’s also the second straight week Sewell has needed to get checked out by trainers for an injury. Last week, Sewell worked through a shoulder issue. This time around, he was back on the field in a hurry despite getting rolled up on. But he returned to action so quickly that his knee injury and game status weren’t even announced by the Lions.
For Detroit’s offensive line and Sewell, Sunday’s 44-22 win over the Commanders was a return to form. They didn’t allow a sack, and the rushing attack gained more than 200 yards for the first time since Week 3 against the Baltimore Ravens.
“I mean, yeah, it was huge,” Sewell said. “You see, when we started running the ball today, the way we want to live up to our standard, it really sets up the whole offense.
“That’s our goal and that’s our plan. It’s always a great feeling when we’re doing our job.”
