The High Point basketball team cruised to an easy Homecoming victory over the weekend to kick off the 2025 season. An ugly spat overshadowed the impressive performance.
A controversial foul sparked an eruption on the opposing sideline. The losing team’s coach got into a back-and-forth shouting match with anyone that would engage.
High Point is a Division I program in North Carolina that competes in the Big South. The Panthers have been one of the league’s top performers over the last two seasons.
Last year, the squad made the NCAA Tournament by going 29-6 and winning the conference. That came after a 27-9 campaign the year prior.
Head coach Alan Huss is off to Creighton, buoying that success into a promotion. His replacement is looking to keep momentum rolling.
High Point hosted Averett in college basketball action.
The game was over relatively quickly. The Panthers held a 33-point lead at halftime. They’d go on to win, 127-52.
Despite the massive advantage, High Point kept its starters in the lineup as the second half resumed. It was just the second game of the season. The staff wanted players to get their minutes before moving onto stiffer competition.
Averett is a Division III school. This is the second straight season they’ve played the Panthers. Last year was much more competitive with High Point earning a 28-point victory.
This year’s matchup got ugly fast.
That ugliness extended beyond the court. Controversial fouls on Averett’s end led to a quarrel between coaches.
David Doino lost his mind.
As the Averett deficit continued to grow, fatigue and frustration set in. At one point, a flagrant foul was called on a fast break opportunity after a Cougars defender grabbed High Point’s best player.

Cam’Ron Fletcher scored 25 points while logging a game-high 22 minutes. The Xavier transfer is looking to finish his career with a strong season after battling back from injury.
Fletcher suffered two season-ending knee injuries while playing at Florida State. He moved onto the Musketeers last year where he played sparingly while getting back to full strength.
The forward was a four-star prospect as a high schooler before signing with Kentucky. Now with his fourth school, he expects to be a major contributor for the Panthers.
He recorded a double-double in his High Point debut. He followed it up with his latest 25-point outburst.
Head coach Flynn Clayman took issue with the intentional foul knowing Fletcher’s injury history. He walked outside of his coaching box to approach the Averett bench after seeing the grab.
Averett coach David Doino quickly responded. He was seen being forcibly restrained while shouting in the direction of High Point coaches and fans.
Things are getting chippy between DIII Averett HC David Doino and High Point HC Flynn Clayman.

It was one of many fouls High Point took issue with. They believed Averett was playing dirty.
Yet another dirty foul by Averett wrongly called over-the-back on Fletcher. Look where they started and where they ended. Undercutting like this can lead to serious injuries. Just 1 minute of gameplay after the Averett coach acted like a fool. pic.twitter.com/DWMWhOLxfz

Averett responded to the criticism with a post on social media. They insist the reaction had nothing to do with High Point’s refusal to pull its starters from the game. Instead, they laid blame at Clayman’s feet.
Had nothing to do with dogs being called off!! We understood who we were playing. They are extremely good!!
Your coach knows what he did for that reaction. Would never celebrate an intentional foul. I was p— about the foul.
Averett insists that High Point was the instigator. The Panthers saw things differently. The spat overshadowed a solid win for the home team. Something tells me the Cougars won’t be on the schedule next year!
