Eddie Howe was grilled by the media following Newcastle United’s 3-1 defeat to Brentford.

Eddie Howe has revealed Nick Pope and Anthony Gordon will be withdrawn from the upcoming England squad.

And in another potential injury blow, the Toon boss admitted he does not know the severity of Joelinton’s injury. Eyebrows were raised when Gordon was named in Thomas Tuchel’s setup on Friday given his recent hip problem.

The winger limped off against Athletic Bilbao in midweek and was never a serious contender to face Brentford. Howe strongly hinted that Gordon would not be involved at the Gtech Community Stadium at Friday’s press conference.

More injury woes

As for Pope, he was dreaming about his first England cap since September 2022 following a surprise recall. However, a concussion suffered yesterday triggers a 12-day protocol and he must now withdraw from international duty.

An early Joelinton knock compounded Newcastle United’s misery on a day when they suffered another 3-1 comeback defeat in the capital. Howe spoke to the media following the Brentford loss to give an update on the injured trio.

Eddie Howe injury update

“Nick Pope suffered a concussion and that's why we took him off,” he said. “As soon as we were made aware of that, then he was withdrawn. Joelinton, I'm not sure, looked like a knock, but I haven't had a full discussion or debrief from the medical team on him. Anthony has a minor injury, so he'll miss England.”

Newcastle United experienced heads

Eddie Howe was also asked whether any of the experienced heads in the dressing room spoke up at full-time. Instead, he preferred to voice his opinion during Newcastle’s post-match debrief.

“We've got an experienced team and occasionally those players may speak,” Howe added. “But I think it was important for me to speak and give my message to the team. In times of adversity and difficulty, I think it's when your true character is tested and when your true character is revealed.

“And I think we need to be very calm, but we need to be measured and we need to be reflective. We need to then come out of this period with a way forward and a way that we're going to be successful away from home and at home and get some more points.”
