FA rules ban Newcastle United star for two matches after Brentford incident

Kieran Trippier applauds fans after NUFC's 3-1 defeat at Brentford

Newcastle United goalkeeper Nick Pope will remain on Tyneside despite being called up by England for the first time under Thomas Tuchel.

Nick Pope has been forced to withdraw from the England squad after picking up an injury for Newcastle United at Brentford on Sunday.

The goalkeeper was substituted due to a concussion after falling awkwardly during the 3-1 defeat at the Gtech Community Stadium. The goalkeeper played on briefly before being taken off after Newcastle conceded a penalty and saw Dan Burn sent off heading into the closing stages.

Aaron Ramsdale came on for his Premier League debut for Newcastle, but conceded twice as the side fell to a second Premier League defeat in a row heading into the November international break.

England squad withdrawals

Pope was one of three Newcastle players called up to the England squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Serbia and Albania. But the goalkeeper’s concussion suffered at Brentford will see him miss out on joining up with the squad.

Pope’s last England call-up came in October 2024, with his last appearance coming over three years ago against Germany in September 2022.

Anthony Gordon will also drop out after picking up a hip injury against Athletic Club on Wednesday night. The only Newcastle player who keeps his place in the England squad is Burn, who will miss Newcastle’s next Premier League game against Manchester City after the break due to suspension.

Following the defeat at Brentford, Howe said: “Nick Pope suffered a concussion and that's why we took him off. As soon as we were made aware of that, then he was withdrawn. Anthony has a minor injury, so he'll miss England.

“[Pope] won’t go away. It’s 12 days [concussion protocol].”

FA concussion protocol

The Football Association rules state that any player who suffers a concussion must be ruled out for at least 12 days after the initial head injury should symptoms clear or seven days if exceptional criteria are met.

The Magpies previously lost Fabian Schar to a concussion injury picked up during the 2-1 Champions League defeat against Barcelona. While Schar returned to the starting line-up, scored and kept a clean sheet against Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup, he is yet to start a Premier League game since his initial concussion.

While Pope may not miss any Newcastle matches, given their next game comes after the 12-day concussion protocol period, he will miss the next two England matches along with Gordon.
