‘We’re in talks’ – Herbert Hainer shares update on 27y/o star linked with Liverpool move

Bayern Munich are still optimistic that Dayot Upamecano will sign a new contract at the club before the end of the season.

Upamecano has a contract at Allianz Arena until the end of the season, and he has yet to sign a new deal at the German club.

His contract situation has alerted top clubs across Europe, including Liverpool, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Chelsea.

We reported back in October that Bayern and Upamecano have more or less agreed on the base salary.

However, the moot sticking point lies in the signing fee, and there is a massive gap in valuation between what Upamecano wants and what the club want to offer.

Liverpool and Manchester United have been linked with a move for the Frenchman, while Real Madrid and Chelsea are also reportedly keen.

Last week, Florian Plettenberg claimed that talks between Bayern and Upamecano’s agent have been progressing well.

Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer has now suggested that the club wants to keep Upamecano, and they are optimistic that he will sign a new deal.

Speaking to Abendzeitung, Hainer said: “We’re in talks with Upamecano. I believe he feels comfortable in Munich.

“It’s obviously an important decision for him as well. In general, he likes it very much at Bayern. We’d like to keep him. I’m cautiously optimistic.”

Do Liverpool have chance to sign Dayot Upamecano?

Liverpool need to sign a new defender in the January transfer window or in the summer of 2026, and Marc Guehi is their preferred target.

The Reds were close to signing Guehi in the summer window, but the deal fell through on transfer deadline day, with Crystal Palace failing to sign a replacement.

Upamecano would still be an attractive signing for Liverpool, but they are most likely to move for him only if Bayern fail to reach an agreement.

The 27-year-old defender has been in fantastic form this season for Bayern, and the Bavarian giants are expected to make every effort possible to keep him.
