Kieran Trippier applauds fans after NUFC's 3-1 defeat at Brentford

Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes took to Instagram to issue a message to supporters after Sunday’s 3-1 defeat at Brentford.

Despite qualifying for the Champions League and enjoying a strong start in the group phase this season, while also reaching the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup, where they will face Fulham at St James’ Park next month.

Bruno Guimaraes issues social media message after post-Brentford snub

Guimaraes was asked by The Gazette to comment in the mixed zone after the Brentford defeat but opted to decline the request and take to social media to post his thoughts instead.

The Magpies skipper wrote: “In almost four years at this club, we’re going through perhaps one of the toughest moments. Just like in life, we can’t always be at the top.

“But something football has taught me over all these years is that in times like this, we need to stick together and never let go of each other’s hands.

“The first part of the season didn’t go as expected, and now, after this break, we need to find the chemistry that has guided us all this time until now. I can assure you that we are just as sad as you, the fans. 🖤🤍3️⃣9️⃣.”

Eddie Howe on Brentford loss

Eddie Howe and his players came under fire following Sunday’s loss at the Gtech Community Stadium as Harvey Barnes’ first-half strike was cancelled out by Kevin Schade’s header before Dan Burn brought down Dango Ouattara inside the box and was shown a second yellow card as a result.

Igor Thiago converted the resulting penalty before adding a third in stoppage time.

Howe was asked whether key players at Newcastle spoke out in the dressing room following the match.

We've got an experienced team, and occasionally those players may speak,” Howe said. “But I think it was important for me to speak, and it always is important for me to speak and give my message to the team.

“In times of adversity and difficulty, I think it's when your true character is tested and when your true character is revealed.

“And I think we need to be very calm, but we need to be measured and we need to be reflective. And we need to then come out of this period with a way forward and a way that we're going to be successful away from home and at home and get some more points.”
