Former Newcastle United striker Papiss Cisse experienced a dramatic turnaround on Sunday, netting six goals for Wythenshawe FC's over-35s side in a commanding 13-0 victory over South Liverpool.
The ex-Premier League forward is amongst a collection of veteran stars competing in the Cheshire Veterans Football League, where they've been dominating the competition throughout the season.
Cisse's afternoon started disastrously when his spot-kick was kept out before his rebound struck the woodwork. Moments later, the 32-cap Senegal international's corner delivery rolled harmlessly along the ground and out of play for a goal-kick.
Nevertheless, the 40-year-old made amends for his torrid opening 30 seconds by finding the net six times after the interval during Sunday's fixture in Greater Manchester.
Press representatives attended Hollyhedge Park to witness the top-of-the-table encounter between Wythenshawe and South Liverpool, observing both the difficult start and subsequent brilliance from the experienced striker.
The Telegraph's James Ducker posted on social media: "Things you don't expect to see at a Sunday League vets game... Former Newcastle and Senegal striker Papiss Cisse missing a penalty then kicking a corner straight out."
However, he demonstrated his class after half-time, scoring six times to put the match firmly beyond reach.
His performance included a moment of Premier League quality with a sublime chip that further extended their advantage.
Following his impressive showing, he was surrounded by supporters seeking photographs and autographs. The veteran team continues to make headlines with their latest goal spree.
This season, they've trounced teams like AFC Monton, Radcliffe Old Boys and Collegiate Old Boys with scores of 7-1, 10-1 and 6-2, respectively.
Cisse netted six in the thrashing of Liverpool veterans' side, Collegiate, while Joleon Lescott, George Boyd and Stephen Ireland have all found the back of the net in Wythenshawe's dominant start to the season.
They boast a roster filled with Premier League legends, including Emile Heskey, Danny Drinkwater, Maynor Figueroa and Oumar Niasse.
In a previous chat on All Out Football's In The Mixer podcast, Lescott revealed: "Over 35s, I'm a striker, 10k I did yesterday (running stats in the game).
"Two poachers goals to be fair, I recognised when the danger was and the other one, I forced the error. For the level, I can press quite intensely, the defender went to pass back, hit it short and I went around the goalie. I just enjoy being able to run around."
