Crystal Palace could be without one of their key players when they return to action after the international break

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner has admitted that Marc Guehi is a doubt for England as the Three Lions prepare to face Serbia and Albania in their latest World Cup qualifiers this week.

The reliable centre-back missed Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Brighton and Hove Albion with a foot injury. He has been the leader in a formidable defence with Palace conceding just nine goals this campaign. Only Arsenal and Manchester City have a better defensive record.

However, Guehi has sustained a foot injury that Glasner admits could rule him out of international duty with England. Guehi has become a key part of Thomas Tuchel’s squad. Palace face Wolves in their first game after the international break.

They then return to Europa Conference League action away at Strasbourg and then host Manchester United before making the midweek trip to Burnley in early December.

Oliver Glasner gives update on Marc Guehi injury

“A knock on his foot,” said the Palace boss ahead of the game when he explained why Guehi was absent against Brighton.

“The bone bruised, he can't even walk at the moment. In the last few days he was on crutches. That's why he couldn't play as I expect. I don't know how this develops over the next couple of days. But at the moment it looks like he can't play for England either.”

Explaining more after the game, Glasner said: “Marc has a heavy bone bruise from the kick he got against Alkmaar in the 93rd minute.

“It didn't look so bad, but during the night, he couldn't sleep the whole night and was in huge pain. We made a scan as we had really huge concerns that he has a fracture. Fortunately he has not, but it's a heavy bone bruise, it's swollen, he can't walk, he's on crutches.

“When you have a bruise, you never know how long it takes. Of course, I hope and he hopes and we all hope that he will be back after the international break, but at the moment he can't step on his foot. That means he's in so much pain and now we have to deal with his swelling. I can't tell you how long it will last.”

Oliver Glasner hails Jaydee Canvot for performance

Glasner named 19-year-old Jaydee Canvot in his starting line-up as Guehi’s replacement. The former Eintracht Frankfurt boss was delighted with the defender’s performance. The Frenchman made three tackles, two blocks and eight clearances along with two interceptions and four recoveries.

Glasner said: “Jaydee replaced Marc one to one in this position and I think he had a very good game. The whole team really defended well today. It was a very intense game, many duels. Brighton have a lot of pace in their attack and we did so well defensively.

He added: “I spoke to the back three yesterday where they feel most comfortable because Chris Richards played the left position when Marc was injured when we arrived and he did very well.

“I asked JD if he feels comfortable playing on the left side. For me, it's always the best, if we have to make a change, we change it one to one than if we have to change three or four positions. Then we said ‘okay, we'll play it in the same way’.

“It also helped him playing next to Tyrick Mitchell, who is a great defender and he showed it today. It was a good performance.”
