Cherries 'out Bournemouth'd' by hosts Villa: Match of the Day

The Cherries fell to a disappointing defeat at Villa Park, with the BBC pundits Gabby Logan, Wayne Rooney and Danny Murphy praising the Villans for their intensity on Sunday.

Andoni Iraola’s side trailed 2-0 at halftime after a poor first half.

Despite a good spell at the start of the second period, which culminated in an Antoine Semenyo penalty that was saved by Emi Martinez, Villa were able to control the game and scored twice more late on to win by four.

Analysing the game, presenter Logan praised the hosts as they “out Bournemouth’d Bournemouth with their energy and intensity.”

Rooney praised Villa’s energy, intensity and their attitude to go and get the ball, with their early positivity setting the tone for the game, the former England striker saying the scoreline was ‘well deserved’.

The pundits also praised Villa keeper Martinez for his two vital saves while the Cherries were on top at the start of the second period.

They said Bournemouth started the second 45 with more energy, but the Argentine keeper kept the Cherries at bay.

First, Martinez had to be alert to backtrack and palm the ball over the crossbar as an Alex Scott shot was deflected and it was heading into the net.

He then had to be at his best to deny Semenyo from the penalty spot, which was ‘absolutely outstanding’.

Murphy said: “Bournemouth are one hell of a good side, they’ve been brilliant and they were going to have a spell in the game.

“Obviously the deflection there [for the Scott chance] nearly deceives him but he moves his feet brilliantly.

“It gives everyone reassurance when you’ve got him behind.

“This penalty save is absolutely outstanding because Semenyo he actually strikes it quite nicely into the bottom corner, it’s a strong right hand.

“He’s been a really good goalkeeper since the day he walked through the door and they’re better with him.”
