Jamie Carragher is now one of the most recognisable football pundits in the country after enjoying a trophy-laden playing career with Liverpool. The former defender has kept himself in the limelight during various television roles and has had plenty to say about the rivalry on the pitch between Liverpool and Manchester City.
Carragher spent the whole of his career with Liverpool and made 737 appearances for the Merseyside giants. He won Europe’s second tier club competition in 2001 when it was known as the UEFA Cup, before lifting the Champions League trophy in 2005. The ex-England international also won two FA Cups and three League Cups before bringing his career to an end in 2013. But he’s just as well known for his comments off the pitch these days.
Express Sport takes a look at how he and the Citizens have crossed paths in recent times...
Manchester City away end ban
Carragher was banned from entering the away end at the Etihad Stadium when Manchester City hosted Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League last week.
The 47-year-old, who sat with Dortmund fans at Signal Iduna Park when the German club hosted PSG in the European semi-finals in 2024, was denied entry by both UEFA and City.
UEFA reportedly believed Carragher’s press credentials were not sufficient enough for him to enter the away section. And the home club were said to be cautious about allowing a former Liverpool player in that part of the stadium.
Carragher had ‘no problem’ with decision
After the Daily Mail’s Mike Keegan posted an exclusive report about the matter to X (formerly Twitter), Carragher offered his response underneath.
“Just trying to have a good time with the Dortmund fans Mike, it was no problem it wasn’t allowed,” replied the ex-player.
“Next time message me & I’ll tell you all you need to know, rather than Simon at Man City giving you a story. Probably explains why you’re so sympathetic around the 115 charges.”
Warning over Manchester City’s 115 charges
Manchester City are currently facing 115 charges of allegedly breaking financial rules between 2009 and 2018. The Citizens have denied all the charges, with a verdict expected soon.
And earlier this year, Carragher, Gary Neville and other pundits were warned by Sky Sports against making 'snap judgements' when speaking about the case.
Carragher and co were informed in a letter that they should 'stick to the facts' and allow themselves 'sufficient time to digest the outcome' before passing comment.
City tifo called out
A month before the warning, Carragher called out City fans at the Etihad Stadium after some of them had unveiled a banner mocking Real Madrid ahead of a Champions League clash.
“It’s absolutely ridiculous,” he told CBS Sports. “Why would you do that? Do it at the end of the game if you’ve beaten them and knocked them out. Why are you getting involved in that? I don’t know what you get out of it.”
He then wrote on X: “Let’s wind Real Madrid up, even though we’ve still got to go to the Bernabeu next week.”
