Newcastle United star banned v Manchester City - ex-referee has no complaints

Kieran Trippier applauds fans after NUFC's 3-1 defeat at Brentford

Newcastle United latest news: Dermot Gallagher has given his view on some controversial incidents during Newcastle United’s clash with Brentford.

Eddie Howe’s side once again squandered a lead in the capital to end the day on the wrong side of a 3-1 scoreline. However, they also ended their afternoon at the Gtech Community Stadium with ten men on the pitch after Dan Burn was sent off after being shown two yellow cards by referee Stuart Attwell.

After a quiet first period, Attwell was thrown into the centre of proceedings in the second half after he decided to book Brentford’s Dango Ouattara for simulation following a supposed coming together between himself and Burn. VAR checked the incident and whilst there appeared to be contact between the Magpies man and his Bees counterpart, opted to stick with Attwell’s decision of no foul.

That drew a strong reaction from the 17,000 home supporters, although their fury didn’t last too long as Burn was then handed his marching orders. Once again, it was a coming together between him and Ouattara that, this time, resulted in Attwell pointing to the spot and showing the Magpies man a second yellow card of the afternoon.

Dermot Gallagher delivers Brentford v Newcastle United Ref Watch verdict

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Ref Watch on Monday morning, Gallagher was asked for his view on both of these incidents. On Burn’s sending off, Gallagher said: “It is [correct]. I thought it was a foul at the time and he was already on a yellow.

“When he gets a second yellow, he says to the referee ‘I accept it’ so he knew.”

However, the first penalty shout wasn’t as clear-cut in Gallagher’s mind as he revealed sympathy for the officials involved amid comparisons between that decision and one that happened just a couple of hours later involving Jeremy Doku during Manchester City’s victory over Liverpool.

“This is where a referee can’t win and there’s been contact [from Burn on Ouattara], there’s no doubt about that.

“I can’t defend that, there is contact there. I understand why the referee gives a yellow card and then it goes back to ‘does it meet the threshold for a penalty?’. VAR says no.

“There is contact and with the Doku one, there is contact. They are polar oppositions with a penalty at one end and a yellow at the other.

“That’s the life of a referee. It’s so difficult. He’s given a yellow card because he thinks Ouattara is deceiving him to win a penalty. VAR says it’s not enough to give a penalty.”

Burn’s sending off at the Gtech Community Stadium means that he will now miss Newcastle United’s next Premier League match. Burn, who will join up with the England squad for games against Serbia and Albania in the upcoming international break, will not feature against Manchester City at St James’ Park when Premier League action returns on Saturday 22 November. Pep Guardiola’s side will head to Tyneside on that day knowing a win would cut Arsenal’s lead at the top of the table to just one point before they take on Spurs in the north London derby a day later.
