Former Boston Celtics sharpshooter Matt Ryan has signed with Dubai Basketball, per Donatas Urbonas. Ryan spent part of the 2021-22 season with the Celtics, suiting up for one regular-season game, scoring three points and registering a steal. Since leaving the Celtics, Ryan has spent time with the Los Angeles Lakers, Minnesota Timberwolves, New Orleans Pelicans and most recently, the New York Knicks. He’s made a total of 82 appearances during his four years in the league, producing 3.7 points per game on 40.2% shooting from deep. Ryan was part of the Knicks’ preseason preparations, but found himself being waived before the start of the new season. A move to Dubai Basketball will provide him with the playing time he’s looking for. He will be among the most talented players in the league. It’s possible he lands in Europe or China in the near future, assuming no NBA team comes calling in search of some additional floor spacing off the bench. Ryan isn’t the first former Celtic to head abroad this season. Oshae Brissett and Lonnie Walker IV (who was previously with the team on an Exhibit 10 contract) both made the move to Maccabi Tel Aviv in Israel, where they’re among the top stars in the league. The talent outside of the NBA continues to grow, and with it, so does the earning potential. Ryan’s decision will put him in a position to continue improving while playing a significant role in a rotation. Given that his NBA future appeared limited to an end-of-bench role, it certainly looks like he’s made the right choice for his career. Story continues below advertisement
