The Albion striker has been ruled out of the Republic of Ireland’s World Cup qualifier against Portugal on Thursday, with Celtic’s Johnny Kenny called up to replace him.
But Roma, where he is on a season-long loan, hope to have him back from a sprained ankle in time for their next league match.
They resume Serie A action against a Cremonese outfit whose squad includes Jamie Vardy and on-loan Albion man Jeremy Sarmiento.
Ferguson, sidelined since the end of October, was hoping to prove his fitness in time to feature in Sunday’s qualifier against Hungary in Budapest.
But he has been denied a call-up to the national team despite pressure from Ireland.
He will instead spend time recovering at Trigoria, Roma’s training ground, ahead of the Cremonese match.
Ferguson has missed recent games with Roma, where he is struggling to make an impact after arriving on a season-long loan deal.
He has been the main source of goals for the Republic in recent months, despite the drought in club football which now extends to more than a year.
He was perhaps a surprise inclusion in the squad in the first place given his current injury status.
There might be a chance to show what he can do at Roma if he can get back into action quickly.
Paolo Dybala is currently ruled out while Artem Dovbyk, a more genuine no.9, suffered a thigh injury after starting yesterday’s 2-0 win at home to Udinese and is being assessed.
Meanwhile, former Albion midfielder Billy Gilmour has been ruled out of Scotland’s match against Greece.
He has missed Napoli’s last two games with a groin injury but Scotland appear to have left the door open for the 24-year-old to return against Denmark on November 18.
A statement read: “Billy Gilmour will not travel to the training camp in Turkey due to an injury, so will play no part in the game against Greece.”
