Wolves are poised to name the Championship man as their replacement for Vitor Pereira
Wolves have been in the hunt for a new head coach over recent times after parting company with Vitor Pereira. They have made a poor start to the new Premier League season and are yet to win in their first 11 fixtures. The Midlands outfit are rock bottom of the table and are in the relegation zone along with West Ham and Nottingham Forest.
They are eight points from safety behind Burnley in 17th position following their 3-0 loss away at Chelsea at Stamford Bridge over the weekend. Next up is a home clash against Crystal Palace after the international break. They then see off November with a match against rivals Aston Villa.
Wolves set to appoint Rob Edwards as next manager
Wolves are set to appoint Rob Edwards as their replacement for Pereira. As per The Guardian, he has ‘agreed’ a three-and-a-half year deal and will leave Middlesbrough in the Championship to take on a new challenge in the top flight. He only joined Boro in the summer but is now poised to head out the exit door.
Edwards, 42, knows the club well already after spending four years of his playing career there from 2004 to 2008, making 111 appearances in all competitions. He also had spells at Aston Villa, Blackpool and Barnsley before hanging up his boots in 2013. The Telford-born man has since delved into the managerial world.
He started out as the U18s coach at Wolves and later worked a couple of different roles including U23s manager and interim head coach of the senior team. The ex-Wales international, who made 15 caps, also managed AFC Telford United and England U16s before stints at Forest Green Rovers and Watford.
Edwards then became Luton Town’s boss in 2022 and later guided the Hatters to a surprise promotion from the second tier. They beat Coventry City on penalties at Wembley but lasted only a year in the Premier League. He then stayed until January before he was sacked after a poor run of form.
Rob Edwards’ win percentage compared to the last five Wolves managers
Middlesbrough handed Edwards a route back into the dugout in the Football League after he took a bit of time out after his departure from Luton. He has done an impressive job with Boro and they are positioned in 2nd in the table behind high flying Coventry City. However, it appears he has now opted to leave the Riverside Stadium to return to Wolves.
Here is a look at Edwards’ career win percentage as a manager compared to Wolves’ last five managers:
Nuno Espirito Santo, 47.97%, current club: West Ham
Bruno Lage, 57.21%, current club: Unattached
Julen Lopetegui, 55.32%, current club: Qatar national team
Gary O’Neil, 31%, current club: Unattached
Vitor Pereira, 52.94%, current club: Unattached
Rob Edwards, 37.02%
Only Gary O’Neil has a worse win percentage than Edwards so far. However, he has managed less games. Edwards has overseen 235 matches so far and has won 87, drawn 61 and lost 87.
