Why Alexis Mac Allister will be all smiles after Argentina call-up

It hasn’t been all plain sailing for Alexis Mac Allister since the season began.

After fans had finally seen signs of the Liverpool midfielder shaking off the rust and inconsistency of the early campaign, particularly with his determined showings in victories over Aston Villa and Real Madrid, the trip to Manchester City delivered a sharp reality check.

The 3-0 drubbing exposed just how fragile Liverpool’s resurgence truly is, with Mac Allister struggling to impose himself on proceedings alongside Ryan Gravenberch in a midfield that looked outplayed.

His performance drew particular criticism with his decision-making both on and off the ball described as too slow.

Yet the international break could arrive at the right moment for the 26-year-old.

Just weeks earlier, during Argentina’s clash with Puerto Rico in October, Mac Allister had provided genuine hope that he was back to his imperious best, netting a brace in a display that local media rated as player of the match.

Operating in a more advanced role—almost as a false nine—Mac Allister found the net twice in a 6-0 demolition.

And this time around, the Liverpool No.10 will be joined at the Argentina camp by none other than his brother, Kevin Mac Allister of Union Saint-Gilloise.

La Albiceleste called up Mac Allister’s sibling as a late replacement for Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez, who is out with a knee injury.

Union Saint-Gilloise posted a video on their social media channels congratulating Kevin Mac Allister, with the 28-year-old saying:

“I just want to say thank you to everybody,” he said.

“Because two hours today before the game [1-1 league draw at Mechelen], I received a call. Tomorrow I am flying to Alicante to be with the national team. It will be my first time and I know I am not there only for me but also thanks to the people in this dressing room.”

“So I want to take this opportunity to say thank you to everybody.”

“My family is very happy.”

“When I called my wife she was crying already so it’s a really good feeling. Tomorrow I will realise a dream.”

The two brothers likely don’t get to see too much of each other in the season, with Union also playing in Europe this year.

Hopefully it proves a positive boost for the Liverpool man, who will hopefully come back refreshed having seen family this month.

A historic first Argentina call-up for our own Kevin Mac Allister! 🥹🇦🇷💙💛
