Paul Tagliabue, former NFL Commissioner, dies at 84

(NBC, KYMA) - Former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue has died at the age of 84 at his home in Chevy Chase, Maryland.

Taglibue's family informed the NFL of his death Sunday morning.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell released a statement about his predecessor's passing writing, "All of us in the NFL are deeply saddened by the passing of Paul Tagliabue, whose principled leadership and vision put the NFL on the path to unparalleled success."

Tagliabue served as the NFL's commissioner for 17 years, taking over the position from Pete Rozelle in 1989, and leading the NFL through an era of expansion until 2006.

Tagliabue had developed Parkinson's disease in recent years, and according to his family, he died of heart failure.
