Man United youngster nominated for award, could break two-year club drought

Manchester United U21s have enjoyed a strong start in the Premier League 2 this term, winning their first seven games.

Last month, they tasted their first defeat in the competition, losing 4-0 at home to Blackburn Rovers.

Several players have stood out for the Young Reds, including Gabriele Biancheri — the side’s top scorer in the league this term.

The 19-year-old striker enjoyed his most productive spell in October and has now been nominated for the Premier League 2 Player of the Month.

He did not provide any goal involvement in the hard-fought 2-1 victory at Everton, but was magnificent against Tottenham Hotspur, scoring a hat-trick and providing an assist as United ran out 4-1 winners.

Tottenham Hotspur’s wonderkid, Luca Williams-Barnett, Manchester City duo Seb Naylor and Mahamadou Sangare are also in the running for the award.

Ipswich Town’s Luca Fletcher and Woody Williamson, Blackburn Rovers’ Brandon Powell, and Laurence Giani are the other nominees.

Biancheri is the first Man United player to be nominated since January 2025, when Sam Mather was shortlisted.

The Welsh forward could become the first recipient of the award from the club in two years — Joe Hugill was the last to claim it in February 2023.

Biancheri’s form has kept Chido Obi out of the starting line-up in the league, as he has started five games, while the latter has started on three occasions.

Biancheri has yet to make his first team debut, although that could change if Benjamin Sesko’s knee injury keeps him sidelined.

Otherwise, the promising striker may be forced to push for a move away from United either in January or next summer in search of first-team opportunities.
