Andy Irving has been handed a late call-up to the Scotland squad ahead of their upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

To date, the West Ham midfielder has only been capped once by the Tartan Army, coming in June 2025 in a 4-0 win over Liechtenstein.

Despite making seven appearances in all competitions this season for the Hammers, he is yet to add to this total.

Yet, this will come as little surprise to many West Ham fans, with Irving being extremely poor to date.

Despite becoming a squad player in recent years, Irving has consistently looked out of his depth at West Ham.

The midfielder has struggled to make a positive impact when he has played, which has resulted in the Scotsman being dropped in the last two matches.

This would have been a big concern for Irving, especially with the World Cup around the corner, as Scotland was looking to reach the tournament.

Therefore, when Scotland confirmed that Irving had returned to the squad on 10 November, an update that had been relayed by West Ham, the midfielder would have been a relieved man.

In the coming days, Irving will have a chance to show Steve Clarke when he should be in the squad going forward, especially if they make it to the World Cup.

On top of this, he will be hoping to use the upcoming fixtures to return to form and show Nuno Espirito Santo why he needs to be picking up minutes once again.

This could help Irving win a new contract at West Ham, with it currently set to expire in 2026.

When could Irving play for Scotland?

Going into the November international break, and Scotland have two fixtures that Irving could play in.

First off, the Tartan Army will travel to Greece on Saturday, 15 November, kick-off is at 7:45pm.

Following this, Scotland will then host Denmark on Tuesday, 18 November, with kick-off once again being at 7:45pm.

Scotland are currently second in their qualification group, level on points with Denmark, who are top.
