Another day, another potential next Celtic manager candidate bites the dust.

According to a report, Celtic have not made an approach for Cardiff boss Brian Barry-Murphy, who over the weekend had been linked with the job.

The hunt for Brendan Rodgers' permanent successor at Parkhead is entering its third week, with interim manager Martin O'Neill expected to step away from the role before the Hoops return to action against St Mirren in 12 days’ time after the international break.

A whole host of names have been linked with the vacancy, including Wales head coach Craig Bellamy, Ipswich Town's Kieran McKenna, Columbus Crew boss Wilfried Nancy and Bodo'/Glimt gaffer Kjetil Knutsen.

One man who has also been tipped as a contender is Irishman Barry-Murphy. The 47-year-old started his managerial career with Rochdale back in 2019 before taking on coaching roles in Manchester City's youth set-up and then as part of Ruud van Nistelrooy's backroom team during his ill-fated stint at Leicester.

He took up the reins with the Bluebirds in the EFL League One last summer and has made a decent start at Cardiff, with his young side sitting just two points off league leaders Stockport with 26 points from the first 42 available.

English second tier club Middlesbrough are also said to be interested in Barry-Murphy with Rob Edwards poised to quit the Riverside Stadium team for Wolves in the English Premier League.

However, WalesOnline report that Cardiff have not been contacted by either Celtic or Boro over former midfielder Barry-Murphy's availability.

Meanwhile, departed Celtic boss Rodgers has been told that a 'golden opportunity' awaits him in the dugout.

The ex Liverpool manager dropped the bomb shell news that he would be stepping down from his post on October 27 with immediate effect, and confirmation of his resignation was quickly followed by a powerful statement from major Celtic shareholder Dermot Desmond condemning Rodgers conduct in the final months of his tenure.

As revealed byRecord Sport, Rodgers has already garnered suitors from the Saudi Pro League and Northern Ireland head coach Michael O'Neill is sure that his compatriot will not be short of options when he decides to return to management.

Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph, he said: "I think it’s disappointing to see Brendan leave.

"He’s been a great manager for Celtic, what he’s won is terrific and his record is incredible – four Leagues and seven Cups within that period – so, yes, I think it’s disappointing and I’m sure it’s disappointing for him.

"I don’t really want to comment too much on it because I’m not a pundit, I’m a manager.

"Every pundit in the country has their view on that situation but I’m just disappointed that someone that I have a lot of respect for in the game has obviously made the decision they made to resign.

"Brendan will be back and he’ll be back in a position shortly if he wants or whether he wants to take some break from the game, he will be presented with a golden opportunity. There’s no doubt about that."
