Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes watched the Kansas City Current crumble against Gotham FC in the NWSL Playoffs after a record-breaking regular season.
Mahomes was in attendance at CPKC Stadium on Sunday to watch the Current begin its NWSL Playoff campaign, with the Chiefs on a bye week in the NFL. The Current entered the postseason as the top seed after dominating the NWSL this season.

The Current won 21 of 26 regular-season matches, setting a new points record (65) and finishing 21 points ahead of their closest challenger, the Washington Spirit. However, despite Kansas City planning for an inaugural championship under Mahomes' ownership, he watched a stunning playoff shock.

No team has ever enjoyed a more dominant NWSL campaign than the Current, who also set single-season records for games won (21) and clean sheets (16). Kansas City recorded 17 consecutive wins during the regular season and had home advantage against a side that sneaked into the playoffs.
In contrast, Gotham FC won just nine of its 26 games this season, earning a total of 35 points. It was expected that the Current would breeze past Gotham and likely walk through the playoffs, but Mahomes watched a significant upset unfold.
Gotham struck first in the NWSL quarterfinal, as Jaedyn Shaw scored after 68 minutes to hand the visitors an unlikely lead. Kansas City appeared to be defeated until Ellie Wheeler scored a dramatic equalizer in the 96th minute, forcing additional time.

After escaping elimination with seconds remaining, it was expected that the NWSL leaders would complete the turnaround, but the Current also fell victim to a last-minute setback. With a penalty shootout beckoning, Katie Stengel scored in the 121st minute to send Gotham FC through.
It was an inspired performance by Gotham, who are part-owned by fellow NFL quarterback Eli Manning. Gotham lost both regular-season games against the Current this season and hadn't won any of its previous five games.
However, Gotham dominated possession against the Current, and goalkeeper Ann-Katrin
Berger starred with seven saves against the No. 1 seed. It was a brutal end to a dream season for the Current and Mahomes, who remained silent after the elimination.

Mahomes reposted Wheeler's goal on social media, but hasn't updated his X profile since. His wife, Brittany Mahomes, who is an investor alongside the Chiefs' quarterback, was not at CPKC Stadium on Sunday.
Though she wasn't in attendance, Brittany did post on her Instagram story, writing, "Thank you." Despite the brutal ending, it was still an exceptional season for the Current, who continue to move the needle in women's club soccer.

Kansas City has a purpose-built stadium under the Mahomes ownership, and in 2024, it became the first NWSL team to sell out every home match. The Current did manage to lift the NWSL Shield at home, but playoff glory remains uncharted territory.
