Morgan Gibbs-White has revealed that Thomas Tuchel called him before going public with his England squad for the current international break to explain why he wasn't in it.
The 25-year-old Nottingham Forest star has just two Premier League goals and an assist to his name so far this season after the Reds made a disastrous start to the campaign that led to the managerial exits of Nuno Espirito Santo and his doomed successor, Ange Postecoglou.
Things have started to stabilise under new boss Sean Dyche, and Gibbs-White has found the net twice in his last two Premier League matches, including during Forest's 3-1 against Leeds United at the City Ground on Sunday, but it was not enough for him to be included in the Three Lions squad.
Speaking about his omission on Match of the Day after the win against Leeds, Gibbs-White said: "That's football and the competition of the England squad. Incredible players I'm fighting [with] for a spot. All I can do is focus on Nottingham Forest, that's all I can do. Personally, it's been a tough couple of months in the season.
"We've struggled to settle with the changes. We are the players and it's down to us. That's all we can do and concentrate on ourselves and kick on."
Gibbs-White failed to add to his goal tally against Sturm Graz last week after missing a penalty in a Europa League game that ended goalless and Tuchel was somewhat candid in his feedback.
"He [Thomas Tuchel] had a conversation with me after the Europa League game. He told me to never take penalties again! He's a really honest guy and the fact that he called me to tell me I wasn't in the squad, I really appreciated that.
"Like I said, all I've got to do is just focus on myself and focus on my team here and putting the performances right, to put myself in a good position to get called up. That's all I can do."
