Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart suffered a concussion during Sunday’s 24-20 loss to the Chicago Bears and was replaced by backup Russell Wilson.
Dart was slow to get up toward the end of the third quarter after he was hit by Bears safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson, leading to a fumble that the Bears recovered.
“Well, this was troubling for the sense that this was the fourth time this season, going back to the preseason, that Jaxson Dart has been evaluated for a concussion,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter said Monday on SportsCenter. “Four times in his rookie year.
“Now he plays an aggressive style of football, is running around....Initially, he went to the medical tent, went to the locker room, and this is an injury the Giants always have to be very careful about. All concussions, but when it’s been four times in a season, that’s problematic.”
Dart is now in the NFL’s concussion protocol, for which there is no set timeline or mandatory minimum length; a player’s return depends entirely on their individual symptoms and how quickly they can progress through the five-phase program.
Via the NFL:
Each player and each concussion is unique, and there is no set time-frame for return to participation. Team medical staff consider the player’s current concussive injury, as well as past exposures and medical history, family history and future risk in managing a player’s care.
After a player has progressed through the five-step process, and is cleared for full participation by his club physician, he must be seen and separately cleared by an Independent Neurological Consultant (INC), jointly approved by the NFL and NFLPA, who is not affiliated with any NFL club. Until cleared by this independent physician, a player may not return to contact practice or play in an NFL game.
Houston Texans’ quarterback CJ Stroud was the most recent NFL quarterback before Dart to enter concussion protocol after he was injured in Week 9. He missed the Texans’ come-from-behind 36-29 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday where backup Davis Mills led the team to victory.
If Dart is not available for the Giants (2-8) on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers (5-2-1), Wilson would get the start.
