It’s all about the reaction for Eveliina Summanen after Sunday’s defeat at London City Lionesses in the Barclays Women’s Super League as attention turns to this weekend’s north London derby.
Wearing the captain’s armband for the clash at Hayes Lane, the midfielder expressed her disappointment to not come away with anything in a game where we showed plenty of fight but were undone by defensive mistakes.
Having twice come from behind – Cathinka Tandberg making it 1-1 in the first half before Eveliina’s stunning free-kick made it 2-2 in the final 20 minutes of the contest – we were undone in the closing stages through an own goal from Amanda Nilden and Godfrey’s second of the game sealing victory for the WSL newcomers.
“It’s obviously disappointing,” Eveliina said, speaking to us after the game. “Twice we came from behind - to make it 1–1 and then 2–2 - but then went behind again. It’s just disappointing.
“As I said, that’s what makes it harder \[to process\] - when you fight so hard to come back and then ultimately lose the game in the end.
“I don’t think we were at our best, especially defensively and on our set pieces. We weren’t strong enough - not getting first or second contacts - and I think that’s what we were lacking. That’s what we need to improve for next week.”
Next up in the WSL we return home to Brisbane Road for none other than rivals Arsenal – a fixture that Eveliina regards as ‘one of the best days’ in a season.
“We’re just going to look back at this game, see what we can do better, and then go into the derby with a different mentality - ready to bring our best.
“I mean, those are some of the best days of the season - playing in those derbies. We just need to make sure we’re as well prepared as we can be.”
