LANDOVER, Md. – Dan Campbell got straight to the point when speaking to his players in the visitors’ locker room following Sunday’s game at Northwest Stadium.
There was no intense motivational speech, no clever quips, and no word salad. After taking down the Washington Commanders 44-22 in a lopsided Week 10 victory, Campbell commended his players for their bounce-back performance after last week’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings.
“Hey, man, that’s the way to go,” Campbell started. “We don’t listen to what anybody else says about what we are or what we aren’t. We know what we are. We always bounce back. It’s about getting better every week. There are things we’ve got to clean up — I got it covered. But man, that’s more like us. That’s a lot more like us. I’m proud of you guys, though. I didn’t expect anything different. I really didn’t.”
From there, Campbell took a rare approach — handing out only one game ball, which went to Lions quarterback Jared Goff. The 31-year-old turned in arguably his finest performance of the season, throwing for 320 yards and three touchdowns with zero interceptions while completing 76% of his passes.
“Defense, if you can hear me, way to go,” Goff said as he addressed his teammates. “Way to respond. I love you boys. Let’s keep going.”
Goff has been money on the road for the Lions. On Sunday, he extended his NFL record by finishing his eighth straight road game with at least a 70% completion rate. He also notched his 65th career game with a passer rating of 100.0 or higher, becoming the fourth quarterback in league history to do so within his first 10 seasons.
The Lions signal-caller joined elite company again, logging his 44th career 300-yard passing game — tying Dan Marino and Drew Brees for the third-most such performances by any NFL quarterback through 10 seasons.
Following Goff’s brief address, Campbell spoke to the locker room one final time before heading back to Michigan.
“Let’s get everything packed up and get the hell out of here,” Campbell said. “Get home. Great job. Six wins. Break it down where you’re at.”
The Lions will head into film review and have a day off before resuming practice this week in preparation for their Week 11 matchup against the reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles.
