Brian Daboll's firing impacts the Lions in more ways than one

The Detroit Lions will be back home at Ford Field for Week 12, where they'll square off with the New York Giants. New York has struggled through injuries and growing pains this year, seeing flashes of greatness from rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart while also managing huge injuries to rookie Cam Skattebo and sophomore receiver Malik Nabers.

To accentuate the doomed season for the Giants, they've fired their head coach, Brian Daboll, midway through the year. Daboll came over to New York by way of the Buffalo Bills, looking to make a name for himself as a head coach rather than an offensive coordinator in the shadow of Josh Allen's greatness.

Of course, the Lions might need a change at OC after this season. John Morton saw his role diminished in Week 10 with Dan Campbell calling the shots, leading to a 44-22 lashing of the Washington Commanders. Daboll might have just become a top candidate for Detroit's soon to be vacant offensive coordinator role.

Daboll's firing could lead him to Detroit for OC role

Under Daboll, the Bills were quite successful on offense. But, a lot of that had to do with just how great Allen is, and Daboll had some issues in Buffalo with his communication style while working with Allen. Jared Goff is extremely comfortable with Campbell calling plays, as evidenced by his work against the Commanders in Week 10.

Goff didn't work out alongside Anthony Lynn back in 2021, which led to his demotion by Campbell. Daboll, a fiery personality, may not be the best fit alongside someone like Goff, who has learned to fully lean into Campbell's firm but trusting approach as a play-caller.

Daboll finishes his tenure with the Giants with a record of 20-40-1.

There are sure to be reverberating effects from this firing on the Lions' upcoming bout against the Giants, as well. Detroit has to win out, or get close to winning out, the rest of their schedule. That's because most of their games are against NFC teams, and having a winning record in the conference can go a long way if they end up tied with the Green Bay Packers by the end of the season.

New York is still a good pass-rushing team, but their secondary leaves a bit to be desired. Their offense is also a struggle right now, with Dart having suffered yet another concussion in Week 10 and now risking his availability for Week 12. That could mean the Lions are dealing with the much-less accurate and much-less mobile Russell Wilson in the pocket.

Daboll being out has landed Frank Kafka the role of interim head coach for New York. He may be looking to have a spoiler game against a team like Detroit. This shouldn't be seen as a freebie by any means by this Lions squad.
