Future Hall of Fame quarterback Matthew Stafford stole the show during the Los Angeles [Rams](https://ramblinfan.com/)' [42-26 victory](https://ninernoise.com/took-game-49ers-regret-more-aggressive-nfl-trade-deadline) over their Northern California rivals, the San Francisco 49ers, in Week 10's showdown at Levi's Stadium.
After all, one of Stafford's four touchdowns tossed on the day was his 400th, joining an elite list of signal-callers to have reached that feat.
Yet the Niners' own, Mac Jones, had himself quite a day under center, too, still filling in for San Francisco's injured starter, Brock Purdy.
And it's too bad the 49ers didn't exactly take advantage of Jones' solid outing.
Despite LA getting out to a quick 14-0 lead, Jones helped engineer multiple scoring drives against a defense that ranked No. 2 in scoring entering the game, ultimately finishing with a 33-of-39 line for 319 yards, three touchdowns against an interception, all for a passer rating of 115.7. And that pick was on a fourth-down attempt that actually worked out better than turning the ball over on downs.
Usually, efforts like those result in a victory, yet the Niners defense had no answers for Stafford and Co.
49ers waste Mac Jones' solid start in Week 10 debacle vs. Rams
--------------------------------------------------------------
San Francisco made it a game at multiple points after the early deficit, and one can only wonder how things may have been different if wide receiver Jauan Jennings hadn't lost a fumble, Jones and the offense converted on an earlier 4th-and-short or if the 49ers defense made one or two more stops when it needed to.
"I still believe if we converted that 4th-and-1 in the first half and we don't turn it over on the other drive, it's a two-score game and I believe we were right in that," head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters after the game.
And if the Niners were able to get their ground game, going, too. That would have taken pressure off Jones, but after running back Christian McCaffrey only averaged 2.5 yards on 12 carries, it's easier to make sense of Jones' 39 pass attempts.
Same with falling behind so early.
"It's not an easy game to play when you get down," Jones told reporters afterward. "I felt like we had a chance there to at least get close to matching scores and we didn't. But the offensive line did a great job in the run game, and obviously in the pass game as well."
With Purdy inching his way back from a turf-toe injury that's kept him sidelined since Week 4, it's fair for Jones to wonder if Sunday's game might be the last time he'll put up great tape for the rest of the league to see.
It would have looked nicer, of course, if a Niners win was attached to it.
