PFF grades, snap counts: Lions earn franchise’s highest mark on offense in Commanders rout

The Detroit Lions’ offense was nothing short of dominant in the team’s 44-22 victory over the Washington Commanders Sunday afternoon.

The Lions (6-3) scored on their first eight drives and amassed 546 yards of offense to charge to a bounce-back victory over a struggling Commanders (3-7) squad.

For their impressive performance, Pro Football Focus gave the Lions some of their best marks of the year with an overall grade of 91.5, an offensive grade of 92.7, a passing grade of 90.1 and a rushing grade of 84.3.

All of those were the best the team has had this season and the offensive grade is the best the franchise has earned going back to 2006, when PFF’s grades begin.

Led by a 320-yard, three-touchdown performance from quarterback Jared Goff (90.3 PFF grade) and 172 all-purpose yards and three total touchdowns from running back Jahmyr Gibbs (career-best 93.7 PFF grade) the Lions offense looked renewed with coach Dan Campbell calling the plays on Sunday.

See below for more on the PFF grades and rundown of the snap counts:

*PFF evaluates every player on every play in multiple facets of the game, such as passing, rushing, receiving, pass blocking, run defense, etc. It is important to note that PFF doesn’t base its grade on the outcome of the play, butrather what a player attempts to do on a given play.

Five highest-graded defenders (with at least 10 snaps): DL Roy Lopez (89.6), CB Terrion Arnold (89.2), LB Alex Anzalone (74.4), CB Arthur Maulet (70.8), LB Jack Campbell (69.6)

Five-lowest graded defenders (with at least 10 snaps): DB Avonte Maddox (38.1), DL Alim McNeill (45.4), DL DJ Reader (46.9), DE Al-Quadin Muhammad (47.1), DE Aidan Hutchinson (53.2)

Five highest-graded offensive players (with at least 10 snaps): RB Jahmyr Gibbs (93.7), QB Jared Goff (90.3), OL Penei Sewell (83.3), WR Kalif Raymond (82.3), WR Jameson Williams (82.0)

Five lowest-graded offensive players (with at least 10 snaps): TE Brock Wright (55.8), RB David Montgomery (56.3), OL Trystan Colon (63.8), WR Isaac TeSelaa (65.1), OL Taylor Decker (66.4)

*The top two receivers for the Lions this year have been Amon-Ra St. Brown and Sam LaPorta. While both still had solid outings, it was Jameson Williams and Kalif Raymond as the standouts with each having a season-high performance. Williams led the team with 119 yards on six catches with a touchdown, earning an 82.0 overall grade. And Raymond had far and away his best and most efficient outing of the year with four catches on four targets for 49 yards, including some crucial late-down catches to move the chains. The Lions spread the ball around and it paid off in a big way.

*The Lions were held to nine pressures, their lowest tally in a victory this season. Even though the likes of Aidan Hutchinson and Al-Quadin Muhammad — who had season-low defensive grades — weren’t in quarterback Marcus Mariota’s face constantly, the defense more than held its own flattening the Commanders’ running game and keeping Washington from consistently getting first downs. A 65.9 overall defensive grade and 63.0 pass-rushing grade were among the lowest of the season for the unit, but not detrimental to their success.

*On the other side of the field, Detroit’s lowest team grade was for pass blocking at 62.0. Truthfully, that doesn’t tell the whole story as they allowed just seven pressures — tied for second-lowest this season — and didn’t give up a sack on Goff during the game. Dan Skipper and Taylor Decker turned in the best pass-blocking grades of the game for the O-line at 79.8 and 75.5, respectively.
