Boomer Esiason didn’t hold back after the Giants’ latest collapse.
After watching the Giants fall to 2-8 on Sunday and potentially losing rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, the former NFL MVP issued some advice to head coach Brian Daboll before he was fired on Monday.
“If I’m still here and I still have a job, I would definitely play Jameis Winston ... I wouldn’t put Russell Wilson out there,” Esiason said on his WFAN morning show, via Instagram. “It’s not Russell’s fault. It’s just the situation that the Giants find themselves in.
“Now there is nothing that Russell Wilson is going to do to excite the fan base, and the fan base, believe you me, wants blood; they want blood more now than ever before. I mean, I thought last week was going to be the week ... something would go down. But now, after this, and yet another fourth quarter collapse, and watching Caleb Williams just run all over the place.”
Dart suffered a concussion in Sunday’s 24-20 loss to the Chicago Bears.
He had rushed 57 times through nine games this season. His rushing ability was one of the few bright spots against the Bears, including his 24-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. But it came at a cost when he was forced to leave the game after taking a hit.
During his postgame news conference, Daboll was asked if he was utilizing Dart too much in the run game. He sidestepped the question, focusing only on Dart’s injury.
“It’s unfortunate, but, you know, unfortunately got hurt,” Daboll said.
Dart left the game after completing 65.5% of his passes Sunday (19 of 29) for 242 yards and rushing for 66 yards and two touchdowns.
Dart will be placed in the league’s concussion protocol. If he is unable to start in the Giants’ next game at home against the Green Bay Packers, Russell Wilson will likely replace him.
Wilson, who replaced Dart after he was injured, completed three of his seven passes for 45 yards while rushing for another 12 yards.
