There’s been claims in the UK that Manchester United plan to move for João Gomes from Wolves as a possible replacement for Casemiro next summer. While there is still no formal offer, the news has already sparked excitement… in Brazil. Especially at Flamengo.
Journalist Jorge Nicola revealed on his YouTube channel that Flamengo’s board are “quietly rooting” for the move. Other Brazilian outlets later confirmed Nicola’s report and noted that Flamengo are monitoring the situation closely.
Flamengo kept 10% of a future sale when they sold Gomes to Wolves in January 2023. The club will also receive another 4% through FIFA’s solidarity mechanism. If the midfielder leaves for his current valuation of €40. (£34m), Flamengo will secure a sizeable windfall.
Wolves would like want more.
Converting Brazilian reais into pounds, the club’s entire budget for 2025 was £26.5 million. Earning almost 20% – or likely more – of that without lifting a finger would be great news for the club.
For Manchester United, the 24-year-old represents an energetic replacement for Casemiro, whose contract ends next year.
Wolves’ battle against relegation could influence negotiations. A drop to the Championship would make an exit likelier.
