Aston Villa, Newcastle United, West Ham keen on versatile La Liga defender

Aston Villa have rekindled their interest in OScar Mingueza, with West Ham and Newcastle United also chasing the Celta Vigo defender.

According to AS via Sport Witness, Aston Villa are the latest to enter the race for Oscar Mingueza, who has already been chased by the likes of Newcastle United and West Ham United. Celta Vigo are losing the battle to keep hold of the defender owing to his contractual situation at the club.

Oscar Migueza has proven himself as one of the key stars for Calta Vigo, particularly this season, where he has been putting in some important performances. The Spanish side are eager to keep the versatile La Liga defender for as long as possible, but time may be running out.

Mingueza’s current deal expires next summer, and while Centa Vigo are making efforts to offer him a new deal, the proposals so far have not matched what the player wants. They are in conversations with his camp, but with interest mounting in the background, the chances for the Spaniard to leave are currently high.

Aston Villa are the latest to enter the race, as they have seemingly rekindled their interest in the defender, after chasing him in January 2025. The report states, Celta Vigo received offers in the region of €12-14 million last summer, which they did not want to consider as they would have barely made anything from those deals owing to Barcelona having a 50% sell-on clause.

While they banked on better offers, which never arrived, Celta Vigo are now staring at the prospect of losing Mingueza on a free transfer next summer. The more ideal situation could see Celta Vigo cash in on the versatile La Liga defender in January for whatever little money they can achieve from his sale, as Aston Villa could ponder approaching for the player they feel suits their system.

West Ham and Newcastle United are interested

West Ham are also interested in Migueza, as Nuno Espirito Santo looks to improve his backline with the versatile La Liga defender. The theory is that the Portuguese manager wants a new right back of a different profile than Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and one who could also play a versatile role, such as in central defence.

Newcastle United are also keen on Mingueza, and could view the cut-price nature of any deal as conducive to their finances. The Magpies need a right-back of sorts to replace Kieran Trippier for the long term, but they might even consider waiting until the summer to get the Celta Vigo star on a free.
