On Monday, Nov. 10 Denver Broncos linebacker Alex Singleton revealed he underwent surgery late last week to remove a tumor after testing positive for testicular cancer.
The cancer diagnosis came as a result of the NFL‘s Drug Testing program that showed he had elevated hCG levels. Singleton, who leads the Broncos and sits fifth in the NFL in tackles so far this season, later underwent further testing which determined signs of testicular cancer.
"It's been a whirlwind,” Singleton said. “I don't necessarily even know if I've fully have coped with everything that's gone on. I found out Monday afternoon what it fully was and then I was going to have surgery Friday. It was nice between the doctors and the team and my wife and the medical team they took on all the pressure of planning all the doctors appointments and surgery planning.”
Following the surgery, Singleton will remain sidelined for an undetermined amount of time. He won’t play against the Kansas City Chiefs this weekend and didn’t want to put a timeline on his return to the field beyond saying he “can’t wait to get back on the field soon!”
After the announcement, Singleton received prayers from the NFL world as media members, fans and more flocked to social media to offer their well wishes for the star linebacker.
“Alex Singleton knew he had a cancerous tumor in his body and he said let me go beat the Raiders real quick and then we can get this [expletive] removed. I don't ever want to hear slander on his name ever again. Prayers up for a full recovery,” one Broncos writer said.
“I got to chat with Alex a couple of years ago at Radio Row in Las Vegas. There might not be a nicer person in the entire NFL. Praying for a quick road to recovery. Thank you for sharing, Alex!” offered another.
“Wow, thank God for a random NFL drug test that detected testicular cancer in Alex. Prayers up. Sounds like good news in the big picture that they caught it early and had a successful surgery. Wild that he knew about it and played in the game then had surgery the next day,” added a third.
Denver is tied with the Indianapolis Colts and New England Patriots for best record in the NFL at 8-2.
