ALLEN PARK -- Terrion Arnold is officially in concussion protocol after exiting Sunday’s game against the Washington Commanders.
The Detroit Lions cornerback exited in the second quarter of the team’s 44-22 win over the Commanders. He was spotted heading to the locker room before the first half ended and didn’t return.
It’s been a tough season of injuries for Arnold. The second-year cornerback has left five of the seven games he’s played this season early. Arnold missed two games due to a shoulder injury before the bye. He also dealt with a groin injury earlier in the season and was treated for a back injury in Week 9.
Arnold’s play in coverage has continued to improve when he’s been on the field. Pro Football Focus ranked him as the team’s second-best defender in the win against the Commanders. The 22-year-old was the top-graded cornerback in the league in Week 10 action among those who played at least 20% of their team’s defensive snaps.
Last year’s first-round pick allowed one catch on three targets for only 8 yards and made a run stop after getting challenged by the coaching staff to improve his work in that department.
“I thought TA played much better overall,” Lions coach Dan Campbell said on Monday. “That was good to see.”
Players must follow a five-step process to work through the NFL’s concussion protocol. Those five steps include symptom-limited activity, aerobic workouts, football-specific exercise, club-based non-contact training drills and then return to full football activity.
After a player gets through those five steps, they must be seen by an independent neurological consultant approved by the league and the NFL Players Association.
The Lions are on the road this week to face the NFC East-leading Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday Night Football. Fellow starting cornerback DJ Reed is not expected back until at least December due to a hamstring injury, so Arnold’s progress is worth tracking ahead of that big NFC test.
