Overshadowed by what was an ugly home defeat at the hands of the rival Los Angeles Rams in Week 10 was the fact backup quarterback Mac Jones played awfully well.
With the San Francisco 49ers struggling to get their ground game going against a stout LA defense, Jones was tasked with plenty of dropback opportunities and all but made the best of them, throwing three touchdowns against one (beneficial) interception in the one-sided loss.
And it's possible that might be the last time fans see Jones under center in meaningful action this season.
Jones, who has been starting for the Niners ever since quarterback Brock Purdy re-aggravated his turf-toe injury in Week 4, the one suffered way back in the season opener, has certainly reinvigorated his career in Purdy's stead.
But, even among those who wonder if Jones is the better signal-caller overall, any doubts whether Purdy will reclaim his job once healthy enough to do so were soon put to rest by head coach Kyle Shanahan after the game.
"This is Brock's team," Shanahan said, via ESPN's Nick Wagoner. "And if Brock's good to go and can play like Brock, there's no decision to be made."
And that "good to go" aspect might be hitting soon.
Jay Glazer reports 49ers may play Brock Purdy vs. Cardinals in Week 11
Fox Sports insider Jay Glazer, who is well-connected throughout the league, offered up some recent insight about Purdy's eventual return to action.
"The 49ers, they lost to their division rivals, but their quarterback, Brock Purdy, is expected to return to the starting lineup next week, barring any setback this week," Glazer pointed out.
Next week would be another NFC West showdown against the Arizona Cardinals, whom Purdy grew up watching in his native state.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan has tickled the idea of Purdy's return, including a suggestion the quarterback could be active as Jones' backup last Sunday, only to pivot at the last second and inactivate the Niners' franchise signal-caller.
This has allowed Jones to seize center stage, of course. And, for the most part, the resurgent efforts have gone well. He's among league leaders in average passing yards per game (268.9), completion percentage (69.6) and yards per attempt (7.4).
But, with Purdy's pending return, all of that could soon come to a close.
