The New York Giants fell to 2-8 and are sitting at the bottom of the NFC East following Sunday’s loss to the Chicago Bears.
After finishing with a 3-14 record last season, things are not getting better in the Big Apple, which is why it was no surprise when the franchise parted ways with head coach Brian Daboll on Monday.
Now, Giants assistant head coach and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka is serving as the Giants’ interim head coach and will lead the team for the remainder of the 2025 season.
Unfortunately, even with a new head coach, the Giants still have problems. Their biggest one right now is that star rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart suffered a concussion during the team’s 24-20 loss to the Chicago Bears on Sunday, so they’ll need to get some quarterback help until Dart is cleared to return to the field.
Since Dart’s availability is in question for Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers, Kafka will have to make the decision whether to tap veteran signal-caller Russell Wilson or backup quarterback Jameis Winston to start. While it may seem like a no-brainer to go with Wilson, who started the season as the team’s Q1, there’s more to the puzzle.
Dan Benton of the Giants Wire made his thoughts clear on who he thinks should step up; his vote is for Winston.
Benton doesn’t hold back, stating, that Wilson, a former Super Bowl champion, “appears washed, struggling to ignite a stagnant offense plagued by turnovers and inefficiency (the Cowboys game aside). His short-term presence offers little beyond stopgap stability, with no realistic path to a return in 2026.”
Winston signed a two-year contract with the Giants during the offseason and was sidelined as the inactive third-stringer through the team’s first 10 games of the season.
“A natural leader with infectious energy, Winston excels at motivating teammates and rallying limping units,” Benton says in the piece. “His arm talent can conjure explosive plays, keeping drives alive where Wilson falters.”
