Denver Broncos linebacker Alex Singleton revealed he underwent surgery to address a cancer diagnosis.
In a statement posted to X, Singleton, 31, said the cancerous tumor in a testicle was discovered thanks to a league-mandated random drug test that revealed he had elevated levels of the hormone hcG in his system.
Surprised by the test results, he made an appointment with a urologist before undergoing several tests, including CT and ultrasound scans, that confirmed the cancer.
He underwent surgery on Friday one day after making nine tackles in the Broncos 10-7 win against the Las Vegas Raiders.
“I wrestled with sharing such personal information publicly,” Singleton wrote. “But the fact is, if it helps one person decide to pay closer attention to their body, then it is well worth it. Early detection and screenings save lives and can save loved ones from a lot of grief.”
Singleton informed his teammates of the surgery on Monday, shocking many considering his performance against Las Vegas. He is hopeful for a full recovery, he said.
A team captain who is the Broncos’ leader tackles this season with 89, Singleton said he will miss Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs. The Broncos have a bye in Week 12.
Singleton played college football at Montana State and was signed as an undrafted free agent by Seahawks after the 2015 NFL draft.
He has also played for the Eagles and the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League.
