'My phone hasn't stopped' - Wayne Rooney tipped to join all-star team

Wayne Rooney could become the latest former Premier League star to feature in the most famous Sunday league side in the country.

Wythenshawe Vets' star-studded squad has seen the Manchester-based club go viral amongst football fans on social media.

Their side already includes Premier League winners Danny Drinkwater and Joleon Lescott.

Meanwhile, they also boast Steven Ireland, Maynor Figueroa, George Boyd, Papiss Cisse, Oumar Niasse and Nedum Onouha have also featured.

Rooney's former England teammate, Emile Heskey, has even made an appearance for the club.

The former pros recently powered Wythenshawe Vets to a 13-0 win over South Liverpool.

On that occasion, Cisse plundered seven second-half goals after turning up late for the clash which also saw him have a penalty saved.

After fans uncovered their squad list, Ireland admits he has been inundated with calls from prospective players.

A host of ex-professionals are keen to join the ranks with Rooney understood to be keen on making an appearance.

The Daily Mail also report that former UFC champion Conor McGregor has been trying to get a game for the club.

Ireland admitted: "My phone hasn't stopped. I've got people going, 'how do I get involved, how do I sign up?'

"I just want to be wary of not bringing too many people, because I want it to be a mix of the proper old vets with maybe four or five pros each time.

"But it is great fun, even as an incentive during the week to prepare for it. That's what it's like now."

Wythenshawe Vets currently play in the Cheshire Veterans Football League, consisting of clubs made up of players aged over 35.

Their transformation began in the summer after Ireland was brought in by friend and current teammate Blake Norton.

It followed two cup final defeats for the club last season.

The former Manchester City and Aston Villa midfielder has since invited along a string of retired stars.

Alongside their Sunday league commitments, the group also play nine-a-side together each week.

Rooney could now be the latest name to join their ranks four years after retiring.

The former England and Manchester United captain retired aged 35 back in 2021.

He ended his career with 53 goals in 120 caps for the Three Lions as well as five Premier League titles and the Champions League with United.

Rooney has since had spells managing Derby, DC United, Birmingham and Plymouth but has been away from the dugout since New Year's Eve.
