Dontayvion Wicks Is Gone Barring a Miracle in 2nd Half of Packers' Season

The Green Bay Packers have a wealth of wide receivers at their disposal after selecting Matthew Golden and Savion Williams in the 2025 draft. Those rookies joined the returning faces to the wide receiver room, such as Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, and Dontayvion Wicks, giving starting quarterback Jordan Love all of the weapons on the outside he could possibly ask for.

This group was only going to stay intact for so long, though, as free agency and trades overhaul rosters across the league every offseason. For one Packers wideout, in particular, [the end of the road in Green Bay](https://dairylandexpress.com/dontayvion-wicks-trade-rumor-packers-chance-slim-down-wr-01k7mkv401x0) could be on the horizon despite still having one more year on his contract.

Packers' Dontayvion Wicks Likely in His Final Season With Green Bay

-------------------------------------------------------------------

As a 2023 fifth-round pick, the final year of Dontayvion Wicks' rookie contract is a 2026 season with a base salary of roughly $1.15 million. That's a low price tag, but it still isn't likely to be enough to save his job for 2026.

From a production standpoint alone, Wicks has provided a lot for Green Bay in his 38 appearances for the Packers, as the former University of Virginia standout has recorded 91 receptions for 1,130 yards and nine touchdowns for the Green and Yellow. The biggest reason why Wicks is likely in his last hurrah in Green Bay has more to do with how his long-term outlook compares to the potential impact he'd make next season.

The 24-year-old is making just over $1 million. Even if he were to have a down year in 2026, the likelihood that another team isn't going to offer him well north of that number seems slim. And the Packers are way too deep at wide receiver (and needing to pay Romeo Doubs), the Packers won't be able to afford to keep Wicks around.

With Matthew Golden and Savion Williams early in their rookie contracts, Christian Watson looking like he'll be worth keeping around long-term assuming he proves he's back in peak form after his injury and Romeo Doubs looking for a new deal this offseason, any spots behind them on the depth chart need to be both cost-effective and hold long-term upside. That likely means having late-round rookies compete for the spot, since if one were to surprisingly break out, they wouldn't immediately need a new deal like Wicks will.

So trading Wicks come NFL Draft season, even if the return is meager, is the ideal path forward for the Packers. Taking a slight short-term hit on WR depth will be more than made up for by the ability to take another swing at a rookie.

Letting Wicks find a new home in the NFL would also [open up more opportunities for Golden and Williams](https://dairylandexpress.com/dontayvion-wicks-absence-benefit-packers-rookie-most-01k89cy8qszd) to become bigger pieces of the puzzle as they move forward with their respective careers. At the end of the day, the reasons to thank Wicks for his contributions and moving on with whatever draft compensation they can get in return make far too much sense to ignore.
