Bulls Just Got Hit With More Unfortunate Injury News

The Chicago Bulls somewhat came back down to earth over the weekend after losing back-to-back games to the Milwaukee Bucks and the Cleveland Cavaliers. They’re still going to end up much better than the preseason assumptions, but they’re not as untouchable as they seemed through seven games. The Bucks and Cavaliers are two of the best teams in the NBA, so even though Chicago fell short, it’s not time to hit the panic button. Both games were within three points in the fourth quarter and were a few key plays away from flipping the result on a few key plays down the stretch. After a scary sight midway through the third quarter on Saturday night, it seems that one injury for the Bulls has leaked into this week. Here’s who is out, and how long until he returns.

Josh Giddey Out Versus Spurs Tonight

Chicago’s chances of knocking off the Western Conference’s second-best team just took a significant blow. Josh Giddey has been ruled out due to an ankle injury, but will hopefully not be out for an extended period of time. This marks the second time that a premier player for the Bulls has twisted their ankle in a game and looked visibly shaken. Matas Buzelis did something similar during the season opener, but would remain in the game and did not miss any further time. In Giddey’s case, after a brief trip to the locker room, he returned to finish the game, but clearly isn’t fully healthy yet. Ayo Dosunmu will likely replace him in the starting lineup.

This is the most significant loss that the Bulls could suffer. Giddey is averaging a team-leading 21.4 points and 9.3 assists per night, and adds 9.6 boards per night. He’s crawled into the top six of the latest NBA MVP ladder and is a surefire All-Star nominee so far this season. As the primary facilitator of the offense and the most consistent scoring option, Chicago will be looking for contributions from some new faces tonight.

Considering the minimal information that has been released on Giddey’s ankle besides the ‘questionable’ designation that he carried into tonight’s matchup, it’s safe to assume he’s game-to-game. He could return as early as Wednesday night in the rematch of opening day when Chicago visits the Detroit Pistons. Coby White was ramped up again this week as he inches closer to play, noting last week that his goal was to be in the rotation as early as November 16th against the Utah Jazz.

Ayo Dosunmu’s minutes restriction is lifted, per Donovan

Coby White scrimmaged with contact during G League practice. Bulls will see how he comes out of it and current target is for White to play at some point on 3-game West Coast trip.

While tonight might get ugly without their best player, things are looking bright for the coming weeks. Giddey’s return, Coby White’s season debut, and Dosunmu fully healthy will mean the Bulls have to weather the storm this week, but might be close to full strength after that.

Can Chicago steal a few wins before gaining their top assets back, or will the trio of guards have to help dig the Bulls from the trenches upon returning?
