Former first-round pick returning to Pistons on two-way deal

DETROIT — The Detroit Pistons are bringing back a familiar face as one of their two-way players.

The Pistons announced Monday evening they signed Wendell Moore Jr. to a two-way deal, reuniting with the former first-round pick.

“His professionalism, his skill set, his personality, his willingness to work. He was a guy that we felt could help us (last season), we just ran out of minutes,” coach J.B. Bickerstaff said Monday. “It was a great opportunity to get him back, he knows the system, he’s familiar with what we do and hopefully, if needed, he can go out and contribute.”

Moore made 20 appearances for the Pistons last season after being acquired in a trade that sent the 53rd overall pick in the 2024 NBA draft to the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for Moore and the 37th overall pick, which was used to select Bobi Klintman.

The 6-foot-5 former Duke standout made one start in his stint with the Pistons, averaging 3.2 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.2 assists while shooting 46% from the field in 11 minutes per game.

The Pistons waived Moore on Feb. 6. He then signed a two-way deal with the Charlotte Hornets and made 16 appearances.

Before the 2025 season began, Moore spent training camp with the Boston Celtics, but he didn’t make the team and instead signed with their G League affiliate, the Maine Celtics.

Originally the 26th overall pick in 2022 by the Dallas Mavericks and traded twice in successive moves before taking the court, Moore spent his first two seasons with the Timberwolves.

He played in 54 games for the Timberwolves, averaging a measly 1.1 points per game while getting just over four minutes of play per appearance.

In a corresponding move, the Pistons requested waivers on two-way guard Colby Jones. After adding the 23-year-old on a two-way deal in July, Jones played in two preseason games and seven minutes of regular-season action against the Cleveland Cavaliers where he scored two points and had four rebounds and two assists.

Prior to joining the Pistons, Jones spent time with the Washington Wizards and Sacramento Kings after being drafted in the second round in 2023.
