Pelicans burned by hot-shooting Allen, Suns in Phoenix, 121-98

PHOENIX (WVUE) - Owner Gayle Benson’s teams struck some unwanted corporate synergy Monday night (Nov. 10).

Wrapping up a 1-2 road trip with a 23-point loss to the Suns in Phoenix, the New Orleans Pelicans matched the New Orleans Saints with a 2-8 start to their season.

Coach Willie Green’s team actually played the 6-5 Suns even in the second half -- both clubs scoring 57 points after the break -- but a second quarter in which Phoenix outscored New Orleans by a 35-19 margin proved to be most of the difference.

Trey Murphy III led the Pelicans with 21 points. But that was only half of the game-high 42 points poured in by Suns guard Grayson Allen, who knocked down 10 of 15 3-point attempts over the Pels’ ineffective perimeter defense.

Allen’s scoring output was his career best, and also set a Phoenix franchise record for made 3s.

Phoenix shot 50 percent from the floor for the game, including 19 of 43 from long distance (44.2 percent). The Suns have won four of their last five games.

The Pelicans dropped consecutive games at San Antonio and Phoenix after starting their short road trip with a two-point victory last Wednesday in Dallas.

Joining Murphy in double-figure scoring for the Pelicans were Saddiq Bey and Jeremiah Fears with 15 apiece, Derik Queen with 12 and Karlo Matkovic with 11.

Allen’s huge night was supported by 19 points from Devin Booker, 18 from Dillon Brooks and 14 from Royce O’Neale.

The Pelicans return home to host the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday night at the Smoothie King Center.
