Green Bay Packers host Salute to Service game

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - Beyond the game itself, thousands of people at Lambeau Field paid tribute to those defending our country.

The annual ‘Salute to Service’ game took time to honor both veterans and active military members before the game and at halftime.

On the eve of Veterans’ Day, the Green Bay Packers hosted their ‘Salute to Service’ game.

To kick off the celebration of our troops, five gold star families were honored at midfield during pregame, standing before thousands of fans.

They were joined by U.S. Army veteran Chad Wessel as part of ‘Operation Fan Mail.’

“We are actually here to celebrate him being in the service. He was diagnosed with ALS, and we are just enjoying life to the fullest right now.”

U.S. Marine Sergeant Alison Bardeguez sang the national anthem before kickoff and returned for halftime to sing ‘God Bless America’ in special recognition of thousands of veterans and active military members in attendance.

She says it means more to perform these songs after 19.5 years of service.

“Being able to really just get out there and do the best performance, for not just me, for everybody else, is very important,” Sgt. Bardeguez said.

Seeing the number of service members in attendance made a lasting mark on the active military members on the field.

“It’s a great feeling knowing that there are that many service members out here that want to come to this Green Bay Packers game and be part of this atmosphere really creates an awesome environment, and you love to see it,” U.S. Army soldier, Vaughn Campbell, said.
