Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg is usually front and centre on rumours surrounding West Ham striker Niclas Füllkrug. So it was no surprise to see him leading last night’s reports that two German clubs are looking to prise the forward away from East London in January.
Early last week, Füllkrug’s agent — Thorsten Wirth — admitted his client wished to leave in January, saying it was best for all parties to accept that the move from Borussia Dortmund to West Ham hadn’t worked out. Wirth is believed to have informed the club of his intention to find a new home for the striker, which German media also echoed.

Plettenberg has now stated on his X account and Sky Sports Germany that VfL Wolfsburg are exploring a January move for Füllkrug and FC Augsburg are also interested. He further claimed West Ham have given the player permission to leave in the winter window, with ROOF (his agency) officially informed, and that clubs in Italy are monitoring the situation. In his words: “The transfer poker has officially begun.”
West Ham’s Stance Still Complicates Any Exit
While it’s likely Plettenberg is being briefed from the player’s side, the line that West Ham have given permission feels overly simplified. The club’s position has consistently indicated that any exit is conditional — most notably on signing a replacement first and achieving terms that make sense financially. In short, interest is real and January is in play, but this is far from a free pass out of the London Stadium.
