Kieran Trippier applauds fans after NUFC's 3-1 defeat at Brentford
Newcastle United latest news: Jamaal Lascelles has addressed his side’s poor form away from home in the Premier League.
A 3-1 reverse against Brentford, exactly a week on from their defeat at the London Stadium by the same scoreline, ensured that Eddie Howe’s side finished the weekend in 14th place in the Premier League table and just two points above the relegation zone. Despite going well in the Champions League and Carabao Cup, their away form in the Premier League is a growing concern, and one that could completely derail their campaign if they are unable to turn their fortunes around on the road.
Lascelles, along with Kieran Trippier, fronted up to the media at the Gtech Community Stadium on Sunday afternoon, reflecting on what had been a disappointing afternoon for the club and his teammates: “Very disappointing. Very disappointing, obviously, any [negative] result is,” Lascelles said post-match.
“I thought the boys, obviously, they gave their all. But again, it's another defeat on the road. Now it's just time for us to stick together even more and go again and work even harder.”
Jamaal Lascelles tackles Newcastle United away form problem
Dan Burn noted ahead of their win over Athletic Club last week that he had no doubts he and his teammates would turn up and perform in that game but matches, such as Sunday’s against Brentford, were ‘where you've really got to earn your money and turn up and perform’.

So what can be done about Newcastle United’s struggles away from St James’ Park? Is it a mentality issue? Are the players beginning to feel the pressure of their winless away run mounting every time a game passes them by?
“No, it's not for us,” Lascelles responded. “Home or away, we approach every single game with the same attitude, same mentality.
“Obviously, the results aren't there. So I get why people might think it will be a thing. It's just down to us players to make sure that it stops.
“Us as players, we know at home the fans do give us an extra 5%. Away teams, when they come to St James' Park, it's their worst place to come because of the fans.
“So yeah, they do give us an extra boost. But we approach every game the same.
“Our fans were loud tonight. Even though the numbers aren't the same at St James’, they were singing the whole time.
“They applauded us after the game, like they always do. We just need to find the answer of just winning the game.”
It must be noted that Lascelles was an unused substitute on Sunday, he hasn’t started in the Premier League since March 2024 and hasn’t kicked a ball for Newcastle United since the end of September. Lascelles’ decision to speak to the media on Sunday, therefore, shows just why he remains an integral part of the squad and why Newcastle United are lucky to have him at the club - and have been for over a decade.
