Michael Keane’s fate at Everton appears to be sealed ahead of the expiry of his contract next summer.

Jarrad Branthwaite’s latest round of injury issues have resulted in the Toffees relying on the 32-year-old so far this term, and he has started every league game so far.

Keane has enjoyed something of a resurgence for Everton of late, and he netted the crucial second goal in their victory over Fulham on Saturday.

However, David Moyes’ has a decision to make regarding the centre-back’s long-term future, and the writing may well be on the wall for him.

Jarrad Branthwaite injury return to force Michael Keane out

Branthwaite’s injury issues have been a huge blow for Everton, and they have left them badly lacking depth at the heart of their backline.

MORE TOFFEES STORIES

Keane has played more than many people expected so far this season, after he penned a one-year extension to his previous contract in the summer.

However, that means that the Toffees could lose the defender on a free transfer once again next summer, and they are rapidly running out of time to seal another new deal.

Ex-Everton scout Bryan King – speaking exclusively to Goodison News – expects that Branthwaite’s injury return will effectively seal Keane’s fate at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

“I think Keane will be leaving for free,” King said.

“I could maybe see him going to back to Burnley. He’ll certainly get another club that’s for sure, probably in the Premier League.

“I think there’d be a few clubs in the Premier League and Championship who would be looking at him. He’s an old-fashioned centre-half who’s a little bit off the pace now for me.

“Hopefully Branthwaite can get back fit and start playing consistently, and that will open the door for Keane to leave, I would imagine.”

Everton have long-term Jarrad Branthwaite partner in their sights

Everton are eyeing a move for Charlie Cresswell in January, after he impressed during England U21s’ victorious European Championship campaign in the summer.

The 23-year-old has had an excellent start to the season with Toulouse, and he has a whole host of Premier League clubs queuing up to secure his signature in January.

Cresswell has already played with Branthwaite in the England youth set-up, and Moyes and Co. are surely lining him up to be the long-term partner for the injured star.

Keane has been a fantastic servant for the Toffees over the years, but a more youthful element is needed in their backline, and a changing of the guard could be about to take place.
