Newcastle United currently sit two points above the relegation zone after 11 Premier League games.
Eddie Howe has insisted there can be “no excuses” for where Newcastle United sit in the Premier League.
Another horror show in the capital saw the Magpies lose 3-1 to Brentford on Sunday. As was the case against West Ham United a week earlier, Newcastle took a first-half lead before capitulating to the hosts.
Howe’s men are just two points above the relegation zone - and six behind the European spots. Manchester City are up next after the international break to compound further misery on Newcastle.
Eddie Howe asked relegation question
The Toon boss was asked directly about the dreaded “R word” following the disastrous showing in West London. Howe responded: “Absolutely (whether being two points above the relegation zone is a concern). It's the wrong end of the table for us, but it is what it is. That's the reality.
“We can't change it. All we can do is affect our next performances to try and change it. We knew that potentially the start of the season would be slightly choppy for us as we entered into a transitional period with the team. But there's no excuse for us. As I say, we take full accountability for what we're delivering. And only we can change it.”
Eddie Howe message to Newcastle United fans
When asked to give a message to the travelling Toon supporters, Howe told NewcastleWorld: “My message is that we know it's not good enough and I take full responsibility for that. And the work to put that right starts now. That's all I can do in this moment.”

Alan Pardew gives Eddie Howe verdict
Former Toon boss Pardew has referenced Howe’s track record while urging fans to stick with the manager. He told talkSPORT: “It (the result) was a surprise really. I'm just surprised with the quality that Eddie's got at Newcastle, that their results are this poor at this stage of the season. Whether the European campaign is really impacting them, which it did for me when I was in the Europa League, so I do have some sympathy for him.
“When I look at his team. Joelinton, (Sandro) Tonali, (Bruno) Guimaraes… what a midfield that is. Murphy was absolutely brilliant last year, Barnes scored today and you have the big fella (Nick Woltemade) they signed. It does look, on paper, a good team. I’m still surprised that the win column isn’t greater.
“I do think Eddie has enough in the locker. He proved that by winning the cup and I do hope that he improves on the situation. I certainly think he has enough in that changing room. Stick with Eddie and let’s see where we go.”
