Barcelona to reopen 22-year-old player’s renewal talks from square one with Jorge Mendes

FC Barcelona have devoted more attention to renewing the contracts of existing players and securing their long-term futures than to buying new players. This strategy has worked well so far.

Recently, club captain Frenkie de Jong put pen to paper on a new contract until 2029 after prolonged negotiations, which involved a change of agents. The Dutchman’s commitment to the club was impeccable.

According to [SPORT](https://www.sport.es/es/noticias/barca/vuelta-empezar-casado-123570511), Barcelona are now planning to reopen talks over a renewal with another player who has recently changed his representatives. The player in question is Marc Casado, [who is now represented by Jorge Mendes](https://semprebarca.com/jorge-mendes-adds-another-barcelona-first-team-player-to-his-ever-growing-portfolio/).

The Catalan club and the super-agent share a strong relationship, and the fact that the 22-year-old has shifted his representation could indicate an intention to extend his current contract, which runs until 2028.

Casado broke into the first team at the beginning of last season when Hansi Flick was short of pivot options. Frenkie de Jong was still recovering from an ankle problem, while Marc Bernal had suffered an ACL injury.

The 22-year-old made himself indispensable in the first half of the 2024/25 season, but once Frenkie returned to his best level, he began to bench Casado. This, coupled with a long injury, saw the Spaniard lose prominence.

Now, with Pedri’s latest injury, Casado is getting more opportunities in Flick’s team. A new deal could be on the cards, and we will have to wait and see how negotiations pan out between the former Barça Atlètic captain and Deco.
